RMD Age by Birth Year

SECURE 2.0 moved the RMD age to 73 — and to 75 for later birth years. Find your row, then read off your first-RMD deadline.

Born 1951–1959 → your RMD age is 73. Born 1960 or later → 75. (Born 1950 or earlier? Your RMD age was 72 under the old law and you're already in the annual December 31 cycle.) The April 1 extension applies only to your very first RMD — and usually shouldn't be used.

Why the jump from 73 to 75

SECURE 2.0 (December 2022) raised the RMD age from 72 to 73 starting in 2023, and scheduled a second increase to 75 starting in 2033. The cutoff is clean: if you were born in 1959 or earlier, you turn 73 (and owe your first RMD) before the 2033 change; born 1960 or later, you get the age-75 rule. The IRS's own comparison chart states it exactly this way.

Note the two-year gap for the 1960 cohort: someone born in 1960 turns 73 in 2033 but owes nothing — their RMD age is 75, reached in 2035.
